lutathione
is extensively broken down in the intestine if taken orally and hence
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), which is the primary precursor, is provided in
Endogenous Antioxidants and Cofactors. NAC has been shown in numerous
trials to reliably boost cellular levels of glutathione in a
dose-dependent fashion. Alpha-lipoic acid is a cellular antioxidant in
its own right but, because of its ability to function in both aqueous
and lipophilic systems, it also functions to regenerate all of the other
cellular antioxidants. Vitamin E is the primary lipophilic antioxidant,
having a primary role in preventing lipid peroxidation in all cellular
systems. Vitamin C is the primary free radical scavenger in plasma and
is the most important regenerator of vitamin E. CoQ10 is the primary
antioxidant in the mitochondria of all cells. It has a critical role in
energy generation but also acts as a direct free radical quenching
antioxidant within the mitochondria, where it also operates to
regenerate vitamin E. Selenium is a co-factor for glutathione
peroxidase, which recycles glutathione.
